Nominmanation
So it looks like ShaunInman.com is a finalist for Best Designed Weblog in this year’s Bloggies. Just my luck, it’s up against Jason “Pfft, that Inman guy doesn’t Stan a Chance” Santa Maria and the vibrant Brookelyn.org.
If you want to waste your vote this year, ShaunInman.com is the ticket to punch. Let’s be honest, I’m using what, all of two colors here? It’s too bad blank isn’t a color—there’s more whitespace than actual content on ShaunInman.com. How about that font-snobbery? All those typefaces installed on your computer? They’re not good enough for ShaunInman.com—oh no, nothing but DIN will do. And did you see this place in October? It was an absolute mess, blood everywhere—it was a whole month before someone finally cleaned it up.
I have 10 reasons not to vote for ShaunInman.com but after three (and not even the top three) I can see a full count just isn’t necessary. Nobody’s that foolish.

Hey, October was my idea! :D
The blank crayon always seemed to clog up my sharpener.
Not only was it your idea, it was your blood! Or blood substitute. I have so little ideas of my own that I’m beginning to think that I’m actually the one pirating my design.
Well I’m pretty much a daily visitor.. and this is my first comment here. To make a long post short, your Blog is freaking sweet and you don’t need any award to show it. :)
Thanks for the vote of confidence Rob, what ever you do though don’t give me your vote in the 2005 Bloggies. ;D
Awwww…. that little exchange was sweet you guys. ;D
My vote was an ‘undecided’ - that was until the brilliance of “Virtual Stan”…
You kids and your self-defecating humor…
Congrats!
I actually kept going back and forth trying to decide between here and Jason’s site. In the end, I tried to vote for this one but I was confronted with a “bandwidth limit exceeded” error and gave up.
Don’t think I’ll be voting this year. Somebody call the usability guys. ;)
Well, I can’t stand you OR that Stan guy… hmmm decisions, decisions ;)
Shaun-
I was all prepared to vote for Santa Maria until I heard him sing Roxanne. Now i just can’t bring myself to do it. So I was going to vote for you, mostly because that blood was freaking sweet. But then I just read that it was Jason’s idea. So alas, my vote will go to Brooke. After all, her blog is vibrant — you said so yourself.
And plus, she’s way hotter than either of you two.
I’ll be trading my Inman vote with a Naderite in Kansas who’s voting for Santa Maria. Or so he claims …
Sweet! Kansas! Looks like I might sweep all the red states. And that wasn’t me singing Roxanne, it was Stan, I’m Jason.
This is all very well, but I haven’t been able to get to the the 2005 bloggies site for at least 24 hours now as they seem to have underspent on their bandwidth nozzle.
I was to the bloggies voting page last night, but I’d only heard of about five of the blogs listed there, so I didn’t vote. Even if I wanted to now, I couldn’t… they’ve been over their bandwidth since midnight here.
Well I voted for you.
Well, I’m in Kansas, and I’m voting for Brooke. :)
Just teasing, actually. I’m not sure who I’ll vote for (or if I’ll even vote). Brookelyn.org, ShaunInman.com, and JasonSantaMaria.com are all in my daily visits. I’m not sure how I could pick just one.
But I do accept bribes.
A C’mon, you’re using three colors, give yourself some credit. I see red, gray, and white. This is the time you whip out your large bat and march up to the masses and scream “content is king.” …then settle for second place.
But hey, at least you’re on the list. Good job.
Nice…from http://2005.bloggies.com:
“The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to the site owner reaching his/her bandwidth limit. Please try again later.”
That’s just what you get for trying to vote for me Dave. I warned you…
I could’ve voted for you, but Jason’ll let us buy him beer. :)
“Let’s be honest, I’m using what, all of two colors here?” - that’s right, but you’re using these to colours the right way, and nowadays, it’s an advantage man!
I’ll vote for you just because you use DIN as a font :p
it really cmoes down to either you or Jason. I like them both equally, but I visit here more often (just for your sexy CSS “dropdown”). So I think my vote is being swayed twords Shaun Inman . Also, I’ve always loved the “Plastik” look.
Well, Shaun - my vote goes to you. I’ve never seen Jason’s site, and I’m not going to start now.
Good, cuz you dont want to go through what some of the guys above had gone through. Tough call….very tough call.
Not to lick your boots or anything, but I don’t think there’s a blog on the web that can hold a candle to this one. By far the best design I have yet seen, period (you have my vote).
Sadly, complimenting someone this much almost makes me sick, so for the purpose of balance; you smell like a large pile of old cheese.
Compliment: Yes, Shaun’s site is always a source of inspiration.
Insult for balance: Damn is he ever short! ;D
Well for what it’s worth, I think this blog is the best designed one among the nominees. A hands down winner in my opinion so you’ve got my vote!
I voted for you. I like how clean your site is. It’s quite lovely.
I wish you luck against the other heavy hitters. I agree that the lack of color is a disadvantage, but the site is nice and somewhat subliminal to me.
A lack of colors? Yes, but at no disadvantage to him. I’d actually say the lack of color enhances the clean, smooth look of the site rather than detract from it. I mean, most designers need color variation in order to get a decent looking site, however Shaun does an excellent job with what he does use. You have my vote.
Yay! Go lack of colours!
Inman f**k yeah!
I see you’ve been hitting off the competetion. By linking to Brookelyn.org they’ve exceed their bandwidth. Good job Shaun
That’s quite an asinine assessment of the situation, Andrew, to assume malicious linking. If any one site is responsible for any of the finalist’s downtime, it would probably the Bloggies’ site.
I’m much more comfortable believe that you did it with ill intent.
You have to be joking. If not, you might as well level the same accusation at Brooke and Jason who both linked my site (no doubt maliciously, for the rest of you conspiracy theorists out there.)
I am still trying to bring down Amazon.com… they must really have a lot of bandwidth.
First of all, to the accusation of malicious linking… wow. Just - wow.
Anyway, on to the meat of the topic - you definitely have my vote for the bloggies because I’m quite the fan of your utilitarian design. Everything is clean and there are no distractions to detract from what’s important: the content. Given, the text is a bit small on a laptop or higher resolutions, but the site just calls to me.
I must make note, however, that I’ve seen Jason Santa Maria’s site and I find it to be very well designed and written, but the colors are just too much for me. Keep up the good work.
My site is too colorful? That’s very curious, as I really only use a couple and they are all in the same general tonal range (save black). That’s OK Inman, you can lure people into voting for you under the safety of you serene site :D
I wonder how much the contest will be skewed, or if we will get to see the full results. Meaning, I wonder how many votes you will also garner because people enjoy your programming (IFR, ShortStat) in addition to your design, and how many votes something like Virtual Stan will sway my way. You know, the things that are a bit more arbitrary.
I would just like to state that I nearly made a joke about Jason for his simple grammatical error “..voting for you under the safety of you serene site.”
I then realized that I am an idiot and decided against it, seeing as how I mispel simpel wrds alll teh thyme.
: cough :
Totally awesome website. I dub thee one of my imspiration for designing pure website in CSS & XHTML.
Simple, clean, mean and down right accessible in my opinion. Cheers.
The color scheme works for me in a del.icio.us.com kind of way. That may not seem like much of a design endorsement, but when you consider how hugely popular those sites are you have to admit that something really works about it. IMO it’s because they focus on interesting content before design.
I do think this site puts content first in a similar way, but where Shaun pulls away from the anti-design look is in the brilliant details. Everything fits so perfectly together and is so inviting/easy to read that you don’t even think about it, the best attribute a site with this much to read can have.
That being said, I am not going to vote for anyone. Contests like these devalue the power of my ability to vote. ;D
(haha I don’t know why I put a .com on the end of del.icio.us)
Jason, I’m not saying your site has too many colors, it’s just that this site, when compared to others that I’ve seen, is much more clean and elegant. I honestly wish I could manage to emulate this style without ripping it off. On my site I’m also going for cleanliness over flash, but I just finished fixing the original person’s code and now have to figure out what I’m going to do with it.
Also, I think it’s the books in the corners that draw my eye away from the text. Just my opinion, though. And seriously, compared to brookelyn.org, your site is downright surgically clean.
Just so you know Shaun, I was joking. Too often I forget that sarcasm doesn’t show over the internet.
(especially when it sounds like you could totally be serious)
Sarcasm online needs to be used in situations where it’s a little less possible that you mean exactly what you’re saying.
